Gut Health

See what the medical experts say:

With the variety of things that can damage our digestive systems these days, it may seem impossible to try to get back in balance and restore yourself to optimal health. But it is not just about digestive issues alone, as gastrointestinal health can be the root cause for many other health issues, including brain and mental health.  Indeed, recent research has called the gut ‘the second brain’.

See what the medical experts say:

Gut awareness has been the latest big thing for those interested in good nutrition for good reason.  Most nutrients are absorbed through the gut, so the gut lining is important,  and the good bacteria that reside there in vast quantities are needed to convert food and alert the immune system to toxins.  The vagus nerve system connects the gut directly with the brain and the whole nervous system. The importance of the gut has led to its being called the ‘Second Brain’.  A good supply of enzymes aids the gut in its work of breaking down the food for absorption, and good fibre helps to keep the gut exfoliated and healthy.  There is no point in taking expensive supplements if the gut cannot absorb them!!

The right balance of bacteria in the gut is essential for mental balance.  This has been established by research into ADHD – children with ADHD tend to have higher levels of the bifida group of bacteria.  Those taking micronutrients however, were shown in a recent study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry had been able to reduce over-supply of bifida bacterium species, whilst improving their mental health.

Poor gut health has been linked to a long list of conditions from constipation or diarrhoea, to reproductive system issues, such as menstrual issues, inflammation, prostate or breast enlargement in men, candida infections to chronic respiratory problems, to allergies, vitamin B deficiencies, high cholesterol levels, chronic anaemia, and more.  Poor mental health can conversely lie behind poor gut health – the two are linked.

You can check your own gut health using this questionnaire on the Hardy Nutritionals site.
