Insomnia is where people have trouble sleeping. They may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep long enough. It is typically followed by daytime sleepiness, low energy, irritability, and a depressed mood  It can result from imbibing caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Other risk factors include working night shifts and sleep apnea.  It may result in problems like focusing and learning.  It can be short term, lasting for days or weeks, or long term.

Most people suffering from poor sleep will ask their doctor for a sleeping pill.  While this may in the short term usefully shift the sleep pattern and help matters, there is a massive list of negative side effects.  Long term use is not recommended and has been linked to an increased risk of death.
